This may be my favorite show of the summer for the ways it emphasizes the strength of Richmond's arts- Virginia(ish) artists responded to works found in the VMFA's collections by creating artworks. The resulting exhibition held within Linden Row Inn is especially savvy for its assertion of the significance of Richmond visual arts culture to out-of-towners.

"Reflecting and Collecting" not only educates viewers about the vitality of Richmond visual arts culture and practice (there are illuminating print-outs next to each work, depicting the VMFA work selected and describing the artist's intent in his/her response), but this show also serves as an ambassador and an advocate for the importance of the arts in the way Richmond should be viewed by visitors. In turn, the exhibition reminds us of how we should view ourselves: contemporary and innovative, while acknowledging and building upon the strengths of our traditions and history.

**HUGE apologies to artists whose works are not pictured above- this was an oversight on RVA Artblog's part.

Read more about the exhibition and view works by David Choi, Andrew Kozlowski, Jeff Majer, Amie Oliver (who is also curator of the show), Charles Ponticello, John-Phillip Sheridan, and Aggie Zed at 1708's website. And check out Linden Row Inn's fb page, too, for info on upcoming exhibitions and other Richmond stuff.
