Talk20 #4: Tuesday, March 22

With the success of the first three talk20 events during the past two years, C3: The Creative Change Center and 1708 Gallery are hosting the fourth talk20 event on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The event will feature a hybrid of educators and professionals working in some branch of the creative field - such as art, architecture or design. talk20 is based on a series of short presentations of 20 slides each. Each presenter has 20 seconds per slide to express his or her very own artistic voice. The event has the broader goal of encouraging an exchange between those in the creative industry and a wider audience.

Talk 20 is not a lecture but a gathering, an open forum for the dissemination of ideas in art, architecture and design. Produced in cities around the world, 1708 Gallery together with C3: the Creative Change Center, are the organizers of Talk 20 in Richmond. Presenters will have up to 20 slides and 20 seconds for each slide, to talk about their work.

Gallery 5 and CultureWorks have teamed up to put on a unique series of lectures taking place over the next several months.

Art and Social Change Panel Discussion Tonight

Tonight from 5:30- 7 PM check out a talk featuring local artists discussing "philosophical and practical approaches to effecting social change through creativity."

Second Talk20, sponsored by C3 and 1708

1708 and C3's second Talk 20 this last Tuesday night was great! Presentations by each of the artists and designers were jam-packed with interesting information, some levity, and surprising amounts of inspiration. For those of us who are creative, opportunities to spend time with like-minded people usually result in a desire to dive back into our own ongoing projects; something about being around other creators and innovators reminds us just how important it is to exercise our playful, problem-solving right-brained-muscles.




Talk 20 presenters/artists Tiffany Glass Ferreira and Brian Korte explained how they are using their creative efforts to exact positive change a little bit at a time.




Designers Tamara Van Meter and Peter Fraser focused on the ways design can shape our environments and our identities.

Artists Gordon Stettinius, Shelia Gray, Rosemary Jesionowski, and Susan Singer discussed their personal creative endeavors with humor and humility.




The evening brought another treat in the huge turnout packing 1708. It was nice to see that not only were the presenters happy to discuss what they have going on, but there are tons of people in Richmond who want to listen, and who want to support one another's endeavors.




At the close of the event, C3 Executive Director Chrystal Wake reminded everyone to check out C3's revamped website to get involved in Richmond's creative community- artists and companies can register with C3's FREE directory in order to network and be seen, while other interested parties can stay up-to-date with C3's calendar of events.

"FORUM" at 1708- this Saturday, March 6th, 5:30-7:30 PM:

The FORUM, is an invitational outreach program organized by 1708 Gallery for art students from Virginia's colleges and universities. Students are nominated by their departments and invited to present their most recent work for critique by their peers and the community. The students also get a chance to participate in an exhibition hosted by Capital One.

This year's guest critic is Paul Ryan, Professor of Art, Mary Baldwin College and Contributing Editor of Art Papers Magazine. Students from Virginia State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Mary Washington, George Mason University, and James Madison University will be presenting their work.

"Variations in Red: Recent Paintings" opens at the VMFA Studio School Friday, Feb. 12th at 5 PM

VCA's workshop for grant application assistance is being held today at Richmond Triangle Players from 10 AM- 12 PM. More information about this may be found at VALAA's blog here.


Sally Bowring is giving a 12 PM talk at VMFA Studio School, answering the question, "How... do you curate?" in reference to the Studio School's current show "Variations in Red: Recent Paintings," which will open this evening at 5 PM. More info about this can be found on VMFA's facebook page.


Quite a few rescheduled First Friday openings are happening tonight- we posted about some of those before. In addition to that list, add Frame Nation's opening of their first show, Chad Andrews' "A Quick Visit to Anytowne, U.S.A." with a reception from 5-9 PM.

Another important and awesome event happens this week when Josephine Durkin gives a talk about her work currently exhibited at Metro Space Gallery. This talk will happen in VCU's Fine Arts Building, crit room #3, Jan. 28th, 5:15 pm. Grid's got more info about this here.
