InLight Richmond 2009 Award Recipients

1708 Gallery presented several awards to participating artists during InLight Richmond 2009 on Friday, September 25. The 26 international artists that participated were selected by this year’s juror Adelina Vlas, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

For Gabriel

Two hundred years ago, slaves were traded, executed and buried in a now parking lot near St. John’s church in Richmond. Presented in an empty storefront on East Grace Street, For Gabriel illuminated now buried narratives that occupy the space between Richmond’s historic past and its evolving ambitions. The installation is based on the poem Memorial Department by Joshua Poteat (http://www.blackbird.vcu.edu/v7n1/poetry/poteat_j/memorial_department.htm )

Robert Ventura from Richmond, VA, heads Roberto Ventura Design Studio. In addition, he currently teaches Interior Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. He holds an MA in Architecture from Miami University. Joshua Poteat is a poet from Richmond, VA. His first book, Ornithologies, won the 2004 Anhinga Poetry Prize, judged by MacArthur Genius Grant winner Campbell McGrath. He was also awarded the Poetry Society of America’s 2004 National Chapbook Award, judged by Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Oliver. Besides making poems, Joshua also assembles light boxes using various found materials.

White Light (Phase 2)

Kinetic Video Installation

Virginia native Amanda Long captured the magic of the moving image in her installation White Light (Phase 2) presented on a back wall of St. Peter’s Church. The kinetic light sculpture used the properties of additive light color mixing to engage and encourage the audience to explore the process of viewing light and color. Amanda fantasizes about giving technology a soul and making peace between humans and nature. Amanda holds a BFA in Sculpture and Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently pursuing her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University.

Prism Sentence

Live performance

Renata Sheppard is a choreographer and dancer from Chicago, IL. The interactive movement-installation Prism Sentence addressed both abstract and tangible concepts of “light” in its visual, movement and audio components. The paper skirts the dancers were wearing continuously fell apart and were blown around inside the glass window, as if dancing in the light. She received her BA from the College of William and Mary and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign.

InLight Richmond is organized by 1708 Gallery, a non-profit arts organization committed to presenting contemporary art that questions, challenges and redefines the established aesthetic boundaries. One of the oldest artist-run non-profit arts organizations in the country, 1708 Gallery offers the public an opportunity to investigate and discover the most recent and innovative developments in contemporary art.

1708 is on the web, facebook, and twitter, too. There is a talk on Richard Carlyon there tonight from 6-8 pm, and Richmond's first Talk 20 event will take place at the gallery on October 7th.

The program also includes a big version of the map we linked to yesterday AND a list of designers participating in the wearable art fashion show.

AND you can vote for your favorite installation via texting- these votes will be used to select the People's Choice Award, a cash prize of $1000.

Festivities start at 7 pm- 1708 has provided some info. about parking in the area here.

Richmond Art Events This Week

1708's InLight Richmond will take place this Friday, September 25th from 7pm- midnight, RAIN OR SHINE. Click here for a map of the artist's installation locations.

Howard Risatti will be giving a talk on Richard Carlyon and his work Thursday, September 24th at 6pm, Reynolds Gallery.

Saturday, September 26th, VCU's Department of Dance and Choreography will present a performance entitled "Move: A Tribute To Richard Carlyon" at 8pm, Grace Street Theatre. Reservations are recommended: 804-828-2020

We are most excited to get to hang out with our friend Annette Isham. She hasn't said what her piece will be like, but check out images of some of her previous work below (she also did her undergrad work at UR, so she has some Richmond roots):











Annette will be collaborating with artist Andy Holtin, who did his grad work at VCU. We also posted about him previously, as he has work in the WPA biennial OPTIONS, currently on view in DC. Here are some images of his previous work...

The 2009 Visual Arts Center of Richmond Faculty + Staff + Board Exhibition takes place July 3-August 23. This annual display of work by the Center’s talented array of teachers offers the community an opportunity to get to know the individual artists who make the Center a dynamic place. The show, entitled [work], will also include entries submitted by several staff and board members who work as artists in addition to their professional roles. Due to the Independence Day holiday, this exhibition will be honored with a closing reception on Friday, August 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., to which the public is invited. It remains on view through August 23, 2009.

Date: Wednesday, August 26
Time: 6 -8pm
Cost: $25
Light snacks & drinks provided.

Materials: Participants are asked to bring in a bag of clean/dry items to share (one large grocery bag is sufficient, but more is welcome). These should be things that you were already planning to throw away or recycle: tin cans, plastic soda bottles, magazines, newspapers, cardboard boxes & tubes, plastic/Styrofoam packaging, etc.

Using a variety of materials that would normally end up in a landfill or the recycling bin, participants will create one-of-a-kind lanterns that reflect their own personality and taste. Using my Skull-A-Day project as a starting point, we will look at the variety of techniques that can be used to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Don’t worry, you don’t have to make a skull lantern, though you are welcome to do so of course.

Noah is the creator of Skull-A-Day: a yearlong Webby Award winning online art project that has continued on as an international online community art-making project and a book, SKULLS, which was honored as a "Top Ten Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers" by the Young Adult Library Services Association. He teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Some tools and materials provided, but feel free to begin collecting cans & parts for your lantern!

Lantern making techniques will be based on Colonial Era Pinch-tin lanterns, but the results are sure to be unique and contemporary!

Paul Teeples is a local artist who creates elaborate sculptures with found wood and metal. His work is both witty and serious, a fascinating combination.

GLIMMERING ORB LANTERN
SARAH HAND

Ages: 7 – 12
Date: Saturday, August 29
Time: 3pm – 5pm
Cost: $25
Materials provided.
Light snacks & drinks provided.

Create a shimmering, glimmering orb lantern, woven from translucent plastic and vinyl tubes, finished off with brightly colored transparent dangling tassels that will catch the light!

Sarah Hand is an artist and teacher who lives and works in Richmond. She has taught children's art classes at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond for six years and is known for her popular puppet making and giant parade puppets classes.

PAPER HOUSE LANTERNS

Light snacks & drinks provided.

Learn to make a “placeable” light and discover the art of paper craft in this workshop. Create numerous, small paper houses - some to take home and some to place in an art installation during InLight.

Matt Lively is a painter, sculptor, and printmaker based in Richmond, and he is currently in the process of making a short film. He teaches at Virginia Commonwealth University.
