People have been talking for a while about what Richmond's identity should be and if it is this one thing or the other what will be the representative embodiment of that identity- what will it look like, yadda yadda... Well, Richmond, reread the title of this post.
Yes: THIS IS IT. Whether or not we want to be known as a cultural destination- specifically a destination for visual arts, after May 1st, Richmond is going to be recognized as a major player in the east coast (possibly even national) visual art world.
When Alex Nyerges opened this morning's press preview of the Virginia Museum, he exuded confident pride in what VMFA has become, both in its physical structure and in the ways it will resume its role as a leading capital of culture in Richmond and beyond.
Nyerges' attitude is understandable- especially while viewing the soon-to-be-opened wings of the museum. Though there is work to be done before May 1st, VMFA is beautiful. Get excited, RVA- this is YOUR museum!
